Presidio of San Francisco

The Presidio was originally a Spanish fort later is was seized by the U.S. Military in 1846, officially opened in 1848. Today the fort and surrounding area are a National Historic Landmark District. Over 5 million visitors enjoy the 1,500 acre park each year. Your fist stop should be the visitor center where you can pick up information on points of interest and Presidio history. Some of the sites to see are Fort Point National Historic Site, Battery Chamberlin, The Main Post, Crissy Field Center and the San Francisco National Cemetery. No trip to San Francisco is complete without a trip to the Presidio National Historic Landmark. On a clear day you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the San Francisco Bay.

Open year-round; the William Penn Mott Jr. Visitor Center is open 9 am to 5 p.m. daily. The Presidio can be reached from the north by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge (Highways 1 and 101); from the east by way of Lombard Street (Highway 101); and from the south via Highway 1. Entrance and all National Park Service programs are free of charge at the Presidio.
