In the heart of town is the State Capitol building, Old Town Sacramento and the California State Railroad Museum. Gold County is within an hours drive and offers a treasure trove of off the beaten path places to explore. Nearby by mountains and forests offer camping, hiking and fishing opportunities. Jelly Belly Visitor Center - Not only is the tour free you also get a free bag of candy at the end of your factory tour. More than 400,000 people tour the facility that includes a large retail store and restaurant.
Sutter's Fort State Historic Park - Very few places in California have the historical significance of Sutter's Fort and it is one of the best attractions in the Sacramento region. The fort is well worth checking out.
Effie Yeaw Nature Center - Exhibits related to the natural and cultural history of the Sacramento region. 77-acre nature preserve self-guiding interpretive trails through the woodland and along the American River.
Brennan Island - Halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco Brennan Island is a popular destination for camping and boating. There is also a swimming beach for day use. One hour drive.
California State Railroad Museum - Located on the on the banks of the Sacramento River the museum has a huge collection of locomotives and passenger cars. Fun for family's.
Governor's Mansion - California’s executive mansion, popularly known at the Governor’s Mansion, was built in 1877. Grounds open 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily. Tours are every hour.
California State Capitol and Museum - Public tours are conducted daily, on the hour, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Forty acres of lawns, flower gardens and memorials surround the Capitol building.

The park has roller coaster and a steam train.
Old Town Sacramento - Experience Sacramento at a time of the Gold Rush. Enjoy museums, entertainment, restaurants and lots of interesting shops. National Landmark and a portion is designated as a State Historic Park.   Sacramento Zoo - The "Little Zoo in the Park" opened in 1927. The focus of the zoo has shifted from showcasing as many animals as possible, to creating a recreational and fun experience. Located in downtown Sacramento.
