Redwood
Valley Railway is located at the south end of
Tilden Park in the city Berkeley, California. The railway
has been operating
for over fifty years and is still being discovered and
enjoyed by visitors and locals. The train ride takes you
on a 12 minute excursion around Tilden Park with
views of the valley and the bay below. There are four different
steam engines that pull the trains along
on their trip along the 15 inch narrow-gauge line. Most
of the train cars are open but there are a few covered
ones. The staff of volunteers than run the railway go
out of
their
way to make your visit an experience you will remenber
for years to come.
Tickets for
this fun train ride are only two dollars. Bring along the
entire family, even your tail-wagger is welcome ton the
train. The Redwood Valley Railway makes a great day trip
any day
of the week. The
kids will love the ride on the train in the open air cars,
the
sights and smells of the
steam locomotive, and the sound of the bell and the steam
whistle. This place is truly a hidden gem. If you visit
on Sunday
the Golden Gate Live Steamers and
have free train rides noon to 3p m. Expect lots of familys
when you go, especially on weekends, the line moves
quickly and wait is well worth it.

Directions: From
Oakland,
take Highway 24 east toward Orinda, through the Caldecott Tunnel,
(right bore). Exit at Fish Ranch Rd, at the east end of the tunnel
and proceed north on Fish Ranch Rd to top of the hill. At the
stop sign, turn right on Grizzly Peak Blvd and proceed approximately
one mile. The railroad is on the right at Lomas Cantadas Rd. From
Orinda, take Highway 24 west to Fish Ranch Rd (before Caldecott
Tunnel) and proceed north on Fish Ranch Rd to the top of the
hill. At the stop sign, turn right on Grizzly Peak Blvd and proceed
approximately one mile. The railroad is on the right at Lomas
Cantadas Rd.
