Destination Guide to the Golden State

Randsburg California

Randsburg California is located in the high desert in western Mojave Desert, near Red Rock Canyon State Park. Not quite a ghost town, but well on it's way to becoming one. Off roaders and tourists provide some traffic during the weekend but during the week the week the place is a "Ghost Town." At it's peak Randsburg had a population of 3,500. Today a few people still live in Randsburg and a number of old buildings remain, including a museum which is open weekends only. There are many historic buildings, including the original White House Saloon, which dates early 1900s. Some buildings are inhabited including the Randsburg General Store, still serving food and soft drinks at its soda fountain.

The Randsburg Museum, located at 156 Butte St., open weekends and holidays (except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day), from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information, call (760) 374-2400. Some weekends the town is overrun with bikers of every description. If your looking for a quite desert experience plan your visit during the week. There is still some life in the town of Ransburg and if your heading up 395 into the Owens valley a side trip to this almost ghost town is well worth it.
