THINGS TO DO IN CALIFORNIA

Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area

Pismo Beach Dunes are one of the few California beaches where it is legal to drive your vehicle on the sand. There are about 3,500 acres of dunes in the SVRA with about 2,000 acres off limits. Driving on the beach is four wheel only.

The family car can make a dash across the soft sand to the hard sand next to the water, but if you don't make it it's a very expensive tow out of the sand. There are quite a few places to rent RTV's so if you do not have 4WD it;s best to walk or just enjoy the view from the paved parking lot.

Pismo Beach is a wonderful central coast town and one of the best beaches along the west coast of California. Pismo Beach is located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. During holiday weekends thousands of visitors converge on this small California beach town to drive their ATV's on the beach dunes.

The rest of the year Pismo Beach is a fairly quite place to visit. Driving into town is like taking a trip back to the beach towns of the 1960's. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants but so far no huge high-rise hotels. Nearby attractions are Morro Bay and Hearst Castle.

Pismo beach is defiantly worth taking a trip to even if you do not own an off road vehicle.
The recreation area is located in Oceano, three miles south of Pismo Beach off Highway 1. One mile south of the Pier Avenue beach ramp is Post 2, a post on the beach which marks the beginning of the off-highway vehicle riding and camping area.

OHV's must be transported to this point before unloading. Any areas on the beach or in the dunes that are fenced or signed are closed to vehicular use because they either contain sensitive plant and animal life or are private property.

Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving to the camping and off highway vehicle use areas in the park.

Beach wheelchairs are available for loan at the Pier and Grand Avenue entrances to the beach.

Surfing, swimming, surf fishing, horseback riding and bird watching are popular activities.
