The Oakland Zoo is located in
Knowland Park. On a clear day there is a great view of the San
Francisco Bay. The zoo began operation in 1922 when it was founded
by naturalist Henry Snow. The zoo is not huge but there is plenty
to do and see.
There are over 400 animals that are kept in modern enclosures,
many of them display the animals in areas that look like their
natural habitat. Animals on display at the zoo include lions,
giraffe, monkeys, tigers, birds, reptiles and Amphibians. The
Zoo is nationally known for its excellent elephant exhibit and
has been praised for allowing their elephants to roam freely.
The Oakland Zoo is a non-profit organization, managed by the East
Bay Zoological Society. Founded in 1922 by Henry Snow, the Zoo
has been located in its current Knowland Park location since 1936.
The East Bay Zoological Society has been operating and managing
the Zoo as a non-profit organization for the City of Oakland since
1982.
Inside the Oakland Zoo you will find the Wayne and Gladys Valley
Children's Zoo.with lots of interactive play-structures for children.
The popular American Alligators along with Bats, Pot-Bellied Pigs,
Old-World Rabbits, Bug Room, and the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery
Room are also in the Children’s Zoo.
