Destination Guide to the Golden State

Manzanar National Historic Site, California

Manzanar National Historic Site is a fascinating look into the history of how 110,000 men, women, and children were relocated to the middle of the desert in 1942. After the attack on Pearl Harbor Japanese American's were rounded up and placed in ten internment camps due to concerns about national security. Manzanar has only one main building left standing the auditorium. This building is now the state of the art interpretive center. Inside you will find eight thousand square feet of exhibits displays depicting what life was like for the unfortunate people that lived at the camp. After checking out the interpretive center be sure to drive the 3.2 mile auto tour around the camp. On your next trip through the Owens Valley be sure to stop at Manzanar historic site. The views of the Sierra Nevada mountains are breathtaking and the look back into our country's history is moving.
