Located
in the town of Palm Desert, California the zoo and gardens uses 300
acres of the 1200 acres preserve. Established in 1970 the zoo now
has 10 desert habitats. Some of the desert animals you will see are
Bighorn sheep, Mountain Lions, Giraffe, and Camels.
The gardens feature a wide range of plant life that flourishes in
the harsh desert climate. There is a gift shop, two Cafes that serve
cold refreshments. A non-narrated shuttle service stops at Eagle Canyon,
Oasis Aviary, Wildlife Hospital, Retail Garden Center, Giraffe Park,
Village Wa TuTu, African Wild Dog and Bighorn Sheep.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is the only American zoo and botanic
garden combination dedicated solely to the deserts of the world. The
programs provide environmental education, native wildlife rehabilitation,
plant propagation and habitat restoration, and captive breeding of
African and Sonoran Desert species
The Living Desert features camel rides or if you are looking for a
more comfortable way to view the zoo there is a tram to take you around.
One site you don't want to miss is a huge G scale train display near
the entrance to the park.
The Living Desert is one of six accredited (AZA) private Zoos in the
United States and operates as a non-profit. |
