Harmony
California is located a few miles south of Cambria just off
Highway 1. At one time the main coastal highway ran through
the middle of town. After a modern road was built bypassing
Harmony the town almost disappeared off the map.
Thousands of cars still pass by Harmony each day heading to
Hearst Castle and beyond. However few take the time to stop
and enjoy one of California's smallest towns.
Harmony can trace its routes back to 1869 when a dairy was founded
at the site. Surrounding dairy ranches supported the town processing
milk into butter and cheese at the Harmony Creamery. At one
time there was a school house, general store, stables, blacksmith,
feed store and post office.
William Randolph Hearst often stopped by Harmony on his way
to San Simeon for fresh butter milk to share with his famous
guests. The creamery shut its doors in 1955 with milk processing
going to nearby San Luis Obispo.
Today only the post office (now closed) and two business are
still in town, Harmony Glass Works and Harmony Pottery. Harmony
Glassworks is an art gallery that also offers hands on instruction
(for a fee). Inside you will find a large collection of hand-blown
glass items including sculpture, vases, platters, lighting,
wine glasses, hearts, paperweights, ornaments, jewelry, and
more.
