Avila
Beach, California is located along the shore of
San Luis Bay near the town of San Luis Obispo. During the 1990s
the town was "dug up" by the oil company after it was
discovered that a 400,000 gallon oil spill was sitting underneath
town.
Nearly a $100 million dollars was spent on restoring Avila Beach
and now the seaside town has come back to life with new hotels,
shops and restaurants.
Some locals miss the good old days of Avila beach. Gone are most
of the 1920s-era cottages, biker bars and 1960s vintage motels.
These days your more likely to be sipping wine and staying at a
boutique hotel than riding your Harley into town.
Avila beach still has a commercial fishing pier and the oil industry
is still around but tourists and locals are driving the rebirth
of Avila Beach.
Ocean water here is slightly warmer than other Central Coast beaches
due to San Luis Bay being protected from winds. The half mile long
beach is wide and sandy with the Avila Beach Pier in the center.
Front street runs along the ocean and has numerous ocean view hotels
and restaurants. The Avila pier is 1,685 feet long and open 24 hours.
Fishing from the pier is popular with anglers catching white croaker,
surf perch, jack mackerel and the occasional lingcod. Avila Beach
is a good choice to use as a base for a central coast vacation
