View from Alcatraz Island

The view from Alcatraz Island is spectacular and one of the highlights vistors enjoy while touring the island. Prisoners could see and hear the sounds of freedom from across the bay from the San Francisco Bay island.

No prisoner had successfully escaped. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot and killed during their escape, and three escaped and were never found and probably drowned trying to cross the bay.
