The main cell
block at Alcatraz island was Broadway. Three levels of small cells,
no views, no heating, just noise and confusion. During the 29
years it was in use, the jail held notable criminals as Al Capone,
Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), George "Machine
Gun" Kelly, James "Whitey" Bulger, Bumpy Johnson.
Alcatraz island provided housing for the Bureau of Prison staff
and their families. he entire Alcatraz Island was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and today thousands
of tourists visit the island each year.
