This building
was the recreation hall for Alacatraz Prison. In 1969 a group
of Native Americans called United Indians of All Tribes took control
of the Island and burned down the building.
The Native
Americans who stayed on the island for nearly
two years, demanded the island's facilities be adapted and new
structures built for an Indian education center, ecology center
and cultural center. Also destroyed were the Coast Guard quarters
and the Warden's home. Graffiti from theNative American occupation
are still seen on many of the buildings.
